History of Nose Rings in India

Nose rings originated in the Middle East, and were first introduced during the Mogul period in the 16th century in India. Research shows that there is no evidence of India ever having nose rings before the 16th century.

When nose rings were first introduced in India, they were actually not nose rings at all, they were often flowers attached to a screw that were inserted into the nostril.

Now as the nose jewlery industry has evolved, we have many options for nostril piercings, or septum piercings. The most common nose jewels used in India today, is dependment upon the type of piercing (septum, nostril, bridge.) However, they wear similar nose studs and nose rings as people wear in North Amercia.
Indian Culture is known for its elaborate fashion. This doesn't just stop at clothes! They also spice up their nose rings with chains and other jewels, some even attaching to their ear piercings, or their hair.

In the Indian culture nose rings are worn by hindu, as well as muslim women. Piercings in India, are one way Hindus honour Parvathi, the goddess of marriage. In the earlier years, having a nose stud in India was largely associated with marriage. However more younger women are getting their noses pierced and the association with marriage isn't as strong.

  2. Nose Jewelry and piercing dates back over 4000 years ago and is mentioned in the old testament bible.  It became most popular in the middle east in around the 16th century and represents beauty and status in society.  Some cultures believe that the nose ring worn on the left side relieves both menstrual and childbirth pain.  Just as Rebekah the wife of Issac was given a nose ring on her wedding day, it is tradition in some African cultures for the husband to give his wife a nose ring on their wedding day.  Nose Rings became popular in the American culture around the 1960's mostly worn by hippies.  The nose piercing then became more a punk look in the 70's and 80's and through the popularity of other body piercings it became most popular in American, Canadian and UK cultures in the 90's and has continued its popularity with both male and females.  Its symbolism has changed over the years and the nose piercing is now quite common, especially among women.  With the styles of the nose bone, nose stud and nose screw.  It has become more like the ear piercing as an added accessory that adds beauty and femininity.  It also offers several style such as septum and bridge piercing for those that are looking for more of a punk style.  Several celebrities from female and male vocalist to actresses and actors wear nose jewelry at a part of their fashion style.  Although the most popular age group for piercings has usually been teenage and young adults.  It is now a fashion accessory for adults of many ages and several women in their 50's and 60's are getting their noses pierced and looking gorgeous with their nose jewelry styles.  It seems to be that just like the earring, the nose ring is here to stay.
